Traditional Wooden Japanese Akobujyo Mask

-----Description-----

Akobu-jyo, or Akobujō or Akobu-jo, is a traditional Japanese Noh mask representing a grievous old man. The name "Akobu-jyo" is derived from the mask's appearance, which features lumps or slightly sagging cheek]. In Japanese, "kobu" means lump, and the prefix "A" is believed to come from Buddhism.

This mask is classified as a "jo" mask, which generally depicts old men. Specifically, Akobu-jyo belongs to the category of masks used to portray dignified elderly characters who are often considered incarnations of deities/ Gods.

Key features of the Akobu-jyo mask include:

1. Jutting cheekbones
2. Only upper teeth exposed
3. An expression intended to convey despair and loss

The Akobu-jyo mask, along with other Noh masks, is considered to have significant charm and excellent quality, with many originating from the Muromachi period. These masks continue to play a crucial role in the rich tradition of Japanese Noh theater, helping actors portray complex characters and emotions on stage.
