Traditional Japanese Sanju Mask

Sanju (散手) is one of the characters in the Bugaku (舞楽) performance "Dance of the Virtuous Barbarians".

Sanju (散手) is the abbreviation of Sanju Hajinraku 散手破陣楽. Sanju is one of the masks (舞楽面 ) used in the traditional Japanese performing arts Bugaku 舞楽 dance.  

Sanju (散手) represents a strong-willed warrior in the military dance "Bu-no-mai" (武舞) of the "Left sa-no-mai" 左舞 said to have originated in China. 

The dance has a mythical origin that some researchers have traced to a celebratory performance given at Shakamuni's (釈迦 ) birth or to a dance by the guardian god Isakawa Myoujin (率河明神) reveling in the retreat of the Korean Silla (新羅) army.
