Traditional Japanese Shishiguchi Mask

-----Description-----

Shishiguchi is one of the Kijin Kei mask (fierce god).  Shishi-guchi means lion's mouth. The mask represents the face of the mythical barking lion-dog.

The origins of Kijin kei masks date back to the Northern and Southern Dynasties (1336 - 1392).

Before Buddhism came to Japan, Shintoism was the central belief system in Japan that focused on ritual practice, which many still exist today.

Kijin Kei masks were used in rituals on New Year's Eve to repel demons and evil spirits from the local shrine or temple.

These masks serve two purposes; the first is to portray devils that create disasters or cause the plague, and conversely, they are used to ward off evil spirits.
