Traditional Japanese Shikami Mask
Shikami (顰) is one of the Kijin Kei mask (fierce god).
The origins of Kijin kei masks date back to the Northern and Southern Dynasties (1336 - 1392).
Before Buddhism came to Japan, Shintoism was the central belief system, which focused on ritual practice. Many Shintoisms still exist today.
Shikami Mask Meaning
Kijin Kei masks were used in rituals on New Year's Eve to repel demons and evil spirits from the local shrine or temple.
These masks serve two purposes: They portray devils who create disasters or cause the plague, and they are also used to ward off evil spirits.
