You may have seen a female demon mask or one, but what is the symbolism of one of Japan's most famous oni.

What is the meaning of Namahage?

Namahage is a traditional Japanese festival held in the Oga Peninsula , Akita Prefecture, Japan. Young men dress up as oni (demons), known as Namahage. The oni visit homes on New Year's Eve, shouting in the local Akita dialect to call out laziness and misbehavior, mainly targeting children and young wives.

The Namahage carry wooden knives and buckets, threatening to cut off the damaged skin of lazy people. This is a reference to an old belief that sitting too long by the fire could damage the skin.

The Namahage festival is part of the Namahage Sedo Festival, which combines this folklore tradition with the Shinto Sedo Festival. The festival is held annually on the second weekend of February at Shinzan Shrine.
